Many people might not know, including me that Thailand produces some of the world’s best coffee. In my recent trip to Bangkok, I managed to find a hidden gem in 1 of the best floating market in Bangkok, which is Khlong Lat Mayom Coffee DIY.
Tucked away far inside, it’s located in the more laid back section of the market, less chaotic compared to the food section.
Khlong Lat Mayom Coffee DIY
This shop is well decorated with many of the nostalgic items. Many of those from the 70s and 80s. You can spot many aluminium storage box from those old days brand such as Lucky Strike, Nescafe and etc. They even have those candies and toys on display.
Khlong Lat Mayom Coffee DIY itself serves many type of coffee that you can choose from. From French Press to Drip method. Since it’s nostalgic theme in place, I chose 1 of the oldest method to prep the coffee, which is by Moka Pot.
Moka Pot, from what I know, is an old technique to prepare coffee from Italian way. The pot itself is made of metal, constructed of top and bottom compartment.
At the bottom compartment is where you pour in hot water together with a tray stacked on top of it for you to place the coffee in. Thereafter you locked in the bottom compartment to the top section and let it boil over a low, steady fire stream.
The water will boil and produces steam. In this process, it will brew the coffee over to the top section in its inner funnel. Sounds like a lot of work, but all these are done within 5-minutes time.
Do-It-Yourself at Khlong Lat Mayom Coffee DIY
Once you placed your order over the counter, the staff will bring over all the necessary to kickstart the process. We ordered a cold and a hot version of the drink.
They bring over the coffee grinder filled up with the selected coffee beans in it. For the cold version, they use a stronger taste coffee bean, so it doesn’t get diluted with the ice in it.
You literally grind your own coffee bean in a swift motion that take around 1 to 2 minutes, thereafter, you go on with the process that I mentioned earlier, since it’s Moka Pot method.
Both cold and hot version have a very aromatic scent to it. Surprisingly there are not much acidic taste to it, but a smooth and rich taste as you sip it.

How to get to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market: The easiest and cheapest way is to take the BTS Skytrain to Bang Wa station on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. From Bang Wa, grab a taxi and tell the driver “Talad Nam Khlong Lat Mayom (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม)”, it will take about 15 minutes to get to the market and cost about 80 THB.
